TV producer Andy Wilman shares 20 years of motoring magic and mayhem producing Top Gear and The Grand Tour. Lifelong friend of Jeremy Clarkson, he’s now telling his side of the story. How did a consumer-advice programme on cars turn into a record-breaking, global phenomenon, and how did it all go wrong, to rise again from the ashes in The Grand Tour?
Top Gear turned gloomy Sunday nights into celebratory Friday nights. It made household names of presenters Clarkson, Hammond and May, their unique chemistry and buddy movie antics proving irresistible to a vast global audience. With these three at the helm, Top Gear earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular factual TV show on the planet.
Andy, the mysterious man in the shadows, opens the bonnet with a tale as irreverent, joyful and laugh-out-loud funny as the shows themselves.
