Event Description:

An illustrated retrospective talk on the work of Artist Derek Ogbourne 

Derek studied Fine Art at The Slade in the 1980’s, and has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad. His exhibitions include: What Makes Me, What Makes You at the South London Gallery*, Space International,* Valencia, Spain, the Museum of Optography, Sharjah Foundation, UAE and over 30 films the most recent of which, Bison Hill was awarded numerous awards in Film festivals all over the world.

His periods of production can be broken down into the following categories: large organic paintings (1980’s), interactive art installations (late 1980s early 90’s), performance art (1990s), video and filmic narrative explorations (2000s to the present), and museum installation, The Museum of Optography (2007 to the present). With a return to painting (2017 to the present) leading to the Lockdown Series of 2020, with embattled seascapes and landscapes up to the present. In 2022, Close Up Cinema première of his film Bison Hill.

His work is powered by the frenetic and exhilarating ongoing plot of big themes: physical life, death, violence, beauty and the sublime. Pulsing with the strengths and frailties of what it is like to be human, his obsessive preoccupations result in deeply complex, emotionally engaging artworks. His Museum of Optography series of art exhibitions comprising some 300 works, four catalogues and an encyclopedia, remains one of his most substantial projects to date.

Having recently taken part in the 25th edition of the Sydney Biennale in March of this year Ogbourne heads back to take part in a solo showing of his paintings at Sydney Contemporary in September 2026, newly represented by Brenda Colahan Gallery.
