    Event Description:

    with Shashirekha Prakash

Warli is a tribal art practiced in the western part of India. It involves decorating outside walls of houses with either sot or cinder, using natural calcium powder to paint in white and then drawing with the black powders. This is sometimes also done over a layer of red mud. The paintings traditionally depict rituals, ceremonies and sometimes daily life. Using mostly triangles for the base shapes, the walls are then adorned with animals, birds, trees, water and even underground environments.

Some materials and tools will be available at the art centre, although quality and specificity cannot be ensured. We recommend you bring size 0 and size 4 brushes plus some paints in crimson, white and black, plus some paper or canvas board and a pencil. Many of these materials are available to buy from the art centre art shop at the front of the building.
