Event Description:

The Horler/Mason Sextet brings together six of the UK’s most respected jazz artists in a vibrant celebration of the music of legendary drummer and bandleader Art Blakey. Formed around the creative partnership of pianist John Horler and trombonist Geoff Mason, the group pays tribute to the classic sound of Blakey’s Jazz Messengers while exploring the wider world of hard-bop and modern jazz.

The band features an outstanding line-up:

• Tim Wells – bass
• Winston Clifford – drums

Audiences can expect an enthusiastic and dynamic performance filled with powerful ensemble playing and inventive, thrilling solos. Steve Fishwick, widely regarded as one of the finest trumpet players in Europe, is joined by award-winning drummer Winston Clifford, voted Best UK Jazz Drummer in 2018. At the heart of the sextet is John Horler, whose distinguished career includes close musical collaborations with Pete King, Tommy Whittle and Tony Coe, as well as 20 years as pianist with Sir John Dankworth and Cleo Laine.

The Sextet performs classic repertoire by composers such as Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard and many more, presenting this timeless music with freshness, energy and contemporary flair.
