About the Installation

Step into a cinematic void where ancient textile heritage, profound historical migration, and modern data security converge. MATRIĊI is an immersive digital installation that bridges the historic lacemaking traditions of Buckinghamshire, UK and Malta (bizzilla), intricate fibre practices whose shared roots date back to the 16th century.

This exhibition takes the ultimate symbol of fragile delicacy, the physical lace thread, and reimagines it into a series of dynamic, responsive protective shields. At its core, the installation serves a crucial, active purpose: demonstrating how we can safeguard endangered cultural practices using cryptographic preservation techniques.

Aligning directly with this year’s Bucks Open Weekend theme, Roots, Rhythms, and Rituals, MATRIĊI fuses multiple themes across time and geography, framing lacemaking not as a static historical relic, but as an enduring blueprint protected by immutable code.

The Experience: Roots, Rhythms & Rituals

🌱 Roots | The Geometry of Eight & The Fusion of Heritage

The installation anchors its structural logic in the ancient geometry of the white eight-pointed cross. Adopted by the founding monks of the Order of St. John and ultimately brought to the Mediterranean island in 1530, the symbol became universally known as the “cross of Malta.”

In MATRIĊI, this historic emblem is fused with the delicate 16th-century lacemaking practices of both Malta and Buckinghamshire. The eight points of the cross represent multiple intersecting themes that govern the installation’s design:

The Spiritual & Moral: The eight Beatitudes according to Saint Matthew and the eight virtues demanded of the Order, loyalty, piety, honesty, courage, honour and glory, contempt for death, solidarity towards the poor and the sick, and respect for the Church.

The Cultural: The eight original lingue (national groupings) of the Order: Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castile and Portugal, Italy, Germany, and England (with Scotland and Ireland).

Rather than operating as passive historical symbols, these eight pillars become active computational nodes, governing an array of visual systems that transform sprawling, delicate lace lattices into complex architectural shields of protection and preservation.

🥁 Rhythms | The Acoustic Blueprint

The percussive click of traditional wooden bobbins (l-għażel) forms the sonic heartbeat of the room. This soundscape acts as an executable data input, a live rhythmic trigger that dictates the movement and reconfiguration of the visual installation in real time.

🛡️ Rituals | Cryptographic Preservation

Witness a digital ritual of “soft precision.” To ensure these ancient textile arts are never lost to time, MATRIĊI employs cryptography as a cultural vault.

In this context, cryptography is the science of secure data preservation. The physical stitch patterns, historical rhythms, and structural techniques of the lacemakers are recorded, mathematically encrypted, and locked into permanent, unalterable digital paths (through a process called immutable hashing). This guarantees the heritage of these interwoven cultures is permanently shielded from decay, alteration, or erasure. As human movement enters the space, the luminous lace matrix continuously re-keys and re-weaves itself, visually demonstrating this cryptographic protection by wrapping the audience in an ethereal, secure aura.

This project creates a meaningful dialogue between the diaspora heritage of Maltese lacemaking, the local lace traditions of Buckinghamshire, and the profound journey of the eight-pointed cross, celebrating how ancient rituals of making can be permanently protected and reimagined to address contemporary themes of security and interconnectedness.
