A captivating programme bringing together lyricism, intimacy, and symphonic brilliance, performed by outstanding artists under the direction of Hilary Davan Wetton.
The evening opens with Dvořák’s Czech Suite in D major, Op. 39, a beautifully crafted celebration of Bohemian dance rhythms and pastoral charm. Rich in melodic invention and national character, it showcases Dvořák at his most warmly expressive.
Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll follows — an exquisite and deeply personal work of serene beauty, originally composed as a private birthday offering. Its chamber-like orchestral texture creates an atmosphere of tenderness and quiet reflection.
At the heart of the programme is Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25, a dazzling work of youthful energy and elegance. Played without pause between movements, it is both virtuosic and irresistibly lyrical. We are delighted to welcome Mariamna Sherling as soloist for this performance.
The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60, a work often described as his most graceful symphony. Full of wit, rhythmic drive, and radiant optimism, it provides a brilliant and uplifting finale.
