Visit WebsiteEvent Description:
Swifts are amazing. Superb flyers, they never touch the ground: eating, sleeping, bathing and even mating on the wing. They are the fastest bird in level flight and migrate 3,400 miles twice a year between the UK and Africa, returning to the same nesting spot in the UK.
The sight of boomerang-shaped swifts tearing through azure skies was once a common feature of English summers - where have they all gone? Come to our online talk and meet Edward Mayer who will tell us all about these iconic birds, why they have declined by over 70%, and what we can do to help bring back these iconic birds of summer.
Edward Mayer has been fascinated with swifts from an early age, and worked out what was driving their decilne. Out of this early work he grew ‘Swift Conservation’ into a nation-wide organisation providing advice and training on how to help swifts to a network of groups in the UK as well as abroad, all aiming to help swifts thrive. He has given more than 300 talks to a wide range of people.
This online talk is organised by Wild Amersham @ Sustainable Amersham and Amersham Museum as part of the ‘Bring it Back’ initiative, which aims to bring back the history and biodiversity of St Mary’s churchyard to the Amersham community. We politely ask for a small donation for the talk to support the work we do in the churchyard. A Zoom link will be sent to you one day before the talk.
