Nestled at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, Aston Clinton is a picturesque village in Buckinghamshire that offers a perfect blend of countryside tranquillity and local charm. From scenic walks and quaint shops to cosy eateries and historic pubs, there’s plenty to enjoy in and around the village. At The Bucks Guide, we’ve explored every corner of this lovely village, and here’s what we love most.

🌳 Best Walks

Ridgeway National Trail

The Ridgeway is one of Britain’s oldest roads, used for over 5,000 years by travellers, herdsmen, and soldiers. It passes close to Aston Clinton, offering walkers a chance to experience a historic route through the Chiltern Hills. The trail is well-marked and ideal for a peaceful ramble with breathtaking views across rolling farmland, chalk escarpments, and wooded valleys.

We love this walk for its sense of history and the peaceful solitude you can find just a short distance from the village. It’s one of those routes where time slows down, and you’re rewarded with panoramic views that remind you just how stunning Buckinghamshire really is.

Aston Clinton Park

Aston Clinton Park is a much-loved community space that appeals to all ages. It features expansive green lawns, a duck pond, tennis courts, a modern children’s play area, and even an outdoor gym. Whether you’re up for a relaxed stroll or some light exercise, it’s a fantastic spot to unwind in nature.

It’s one of our go-to spots when we need a breather between stops. We often grab a coffee from Your Café in the Park and take a slow walk around with the dog or just sit by the pond. There’s a genuine community feel here—it’s one of those places that makes you feel instantly welcome.

Wendover Woods

Located just a few miles from Aston Clinton, Wendover Woods offers an excellent day out for walkers, cyclists, and families alike. Managed by Forestry England, the woods feature well-maintained trails ranging from short strolls to more challenging hikes, as well as dedicated cycling paths.

We never get tired of Wendover Woods. It’s especially stunning in autumn when the trees turn golden. Whether we’re walking the Hillfort Trail or taking the kids to Go Ape, there’s always something different to enjoy. It’s a firm favourite at The Bucks Guide for family days out in nature.

🍽️ Where to Eat

The Oak

The Oak is a welcoming village pub known for its hearty food and inviting atmosphere. It serves up traditional British pub fare—think fish and chips, steak and ale pie, and Sunday roasts—with generous portions and fresh ingredients. The pub also offers vegetarian and vegan options, catering to a range of tastes.

We’ve popped into The Oak countless times, and it never disappoints. It’s the sort of place where you’re guaranteed a warm welcome and a pint poured just right. We especially recommend their Sunday roast—tender meat, crispy roasties, and proper gravy. Need we say more?

The Bell

Dating back centuries, The Bell is a historic coaching inn that retains much of its original character. With a menu focused on seasonal British cuisine, diners can expect well-prepared dishes like pan-seared salmon, game pies, and indulgent desserts. The drinks menu includes real ales, craft beers, and a thoughtfully curated wine list.

We love how The Bell combines elegance with tradition. It’s one of those pubs where you want to linger a little longer, especially in winter when the fires are lit. Whether it’s a romantic dinner or a weekend lunch, it’s always a special experience.

Mela

Mela offers a delightful twist on traditional Indian cuisine with a contemporary menu full of rich flavours and aromas. Located on the main road through Aston Clinton, it’s a popular choice for locals seeking a quality takeaway or a sit-down meal with friends or family.

This is our go-to curry house when we’re in the area. The staff are lovely, and the food is consistently brilliant. The butter chicken and lamb rogan josh are favourites among our team. Great value, generous portions, and a real gem in the village.

🛍️ Shops Worth Visiting

Wild Raven Farm Shop

Just a short drive from the village, Wild Raven Farm Shop is a delightful spot to pick up local produce, baked goods, and artisan treats. From fresh eggs and cheeses to homemade chutneys and locally raised meats, the shop supports regional producers and prides itself on sustainability.

We discovered Wild Raven while hunting for local food gems, and it’s become a regular recommendation on The Bucks Guide. Their chutneys are next-level, and the staff are always happy to share a story or two about the products. Don’t miss their brownies—they’re dangerously good.

Local Artisan Markets

While not hosted in Aston Clinton itself, nearby towns such as Tring and Wendover frequently hold artisan markets that are well worth exploring. Expect stalls featuring handmade crafts, freshly baked bread, preserves, and local art.

We always keep an eye on the market schedules—it’s where we find some of our favourite local makers and food stalls. They’re a great way to connect with the community and discover unique finds that you won’t see on the high street.

🏞️ Bonus: Nearby Attractions

Tring Natural History Museum

Just a ten-minute drive from Aston Clinton, the Tring Natural History Museum is a hidden gem with one of the most intriguing taxidermy collections in the UK. Originally the private museum of Lionel Walter Rothschild, it now forms part of the Natural History Museum and houses thousands of specimens in traditional glass cases.

We love how quirky and unexpected this museum is—it’s like stepping back in time. The collection is fascinating, especially for kids, and it’s completely free. Combine it with a coffee in Tring and you’ve got the perfect morning out.

Chiltern Brewery

Britain’s oldest independent brewery in the Chilterns, the Chiltern Brewery is located just outside Aylesbury and offers a real treat for beer enthusiasts. You can book a tour to learn about traditional brewing methods and enjoy tastings of their ales, bitters, and lagers.

We’ve toured quite a few breweries in Bucks, and this one stands out for its heritage and quality. Their John Hampden’s Ale is a favourite, and the brewery shop is well-stocked with gifts and goodies. If you’re into craft beer, this stop is essential.

Aston Clinton may be small in size, but it delivers in charm, nature, and community spirit. From scenic walks and cosy pubs to hidden food spots and artisan shops, it’s a lovely place to unwind and experience rural Buckinghamshire at its best. And here at The Bucks Guide, we genuinely love coming back—because every visit feels a bit like home.
