What do you get when you put four sharp-suited New Jersey boys, a bucketload of bangers and one falsetto that could shatter a wine glass on stage? A night at Jersey Boys that makes sitting decorously in row G feel like a frankly unreasonable request. The long-running musical has rolled into Wycombe Swan with all the energy of a party guest who arrives late, turns up the music and somehow makes everyone glad they came. By the interval, the audience was already collectively resisting the urge to turn the aisles into a dancefloor.

The story charts the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, from their hardscrabble beginnings to international superstardom. It is not all matching jackets and adoring fans, either; there are fallouts, financial scrapes, personal heartbreak and enough backstage drama to satisfy anyone who likes their pop with a side of grit. The narrative zips along at a satisfying pace, cleverly told through each band member’s perspective. Even if you arrive knowing little beyond “Sherry”, you’ll soon be invested.

At the heart of it is a standout Frankie Valli, delivering those gloriously stratospheric vocals with astonishing ease. The performance has all the charisma, vulnerability and edge needed to make a man with an extraordinary voice feel wonderfully human. “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” is a real hold-your-breath moment, followed by the sort of applause that comes from an audience slightly amazed by what it has just heard. Vocally, this is the headline act in every sense.

The other three Seasons are far more than handsome harmony furniture. Tommy DeVito brings the swagger, Nick Massi the dry humour and Bob Gaudio the quieter, determined brilliance, creating a group dynamic that feels properly lived-in. Their clashes and camaraderie make the rise-and-fall story land with more impact than you might expect from a musical stuffed with singalong classics. Together, they have the kind of chemistry that makes you believe they have spent years sharing cramped cars, bad hotels and questionable life choices.

Then there are the songs, and honestly, where do you begin? “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Walk Like a Man”, “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)”—the hits keep coming, each one greeted with the unmistakable rustle of people realising they know every word. This is nostalgia with broad appeal: parents, teenagers and everyone in between will find a tune that has soundtracked some part of their life. It is rather lovely to see a theatre full of different generations united by a very good chorus.

Visually, the production is as polished as the Four Seasons’ suits. The staging moves swiftly between smoky back rooms, recording studios and bright lights without ever losing momentum, while the lighting gives every number its own mood and sparkle. It feels big and theatrical without becoming fussy, allowing the story—and, crucially, those voices—to take centre stage. A special nod, too, to the sound: crisp, full and punchy enough to make every harmony fizz.

The band and musical direction deserve their own round of applause for making these familiar songs feel fresh rather than museum-piece precious. There is a real thrill in hearing them played live, with the bassline kicking in and the harmonies soaring just as your favourite bit arrives. If your foot remains still throughout, check it for a pulse. By the finale, restraint has gone completely out of the window, and quite right too.

It is easy to see why Jersey Boys has been packing theatres for 20 years. It has a cracking story, exceptional performances, a spot-on production and more bona fide hits than most artists manage in several lifetimes. This is theatre that knows exactly what it is there to do: entertain the socks off you. Book tickets, bring your best singing voice and try—just try—to stay in your seat.
