Living in Bucks: Bourne End

2026-07-09T12:42:57Z

Bourne End is one of Buckinghamshire’s most appealing places to live – a village with the rare combination of beautiful countryside, excellent connections and a strong sense of community. Long overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, it is now emerging as one of the area’s smartest choices for families seeking space, fresh air and an easier pace of life. With fast links into London via Maidenhead, access to four outstanding grammar schools and some of the most beautiful landscapes in Bucks on its doorstep, Bourne End delivers the best of both worlds – village tranquillity with the convenience of the capital within easy reach.

Why We’d Recommend Bourne End

Bourne End strikes a balance that can be difficult to find. You have beautiful countryside, riverside walks and a genuine village atmosphere, but you’re never far from larger towns, excellent schools or transport links. It feels relaxed throughout the week, yet there’s always plenty to do nearby.

We think it’s really well-suited to families, commuters and anyone looking to escape the busier towns in Bucks without sacrificing convenience. While nearby Marlow often attracts the spotlight, Bourne End offers much of the same lifestyle with a quieter feel. It’s the type of town where you’ll quickly find that weekend walks and evenings by the river have become part of everyday life.

Things To Do

The Wallnut Tree in Bourne End

One of the biggest reasons people enjoy living in Bourne End is that there’s always something to do close by. If you’re a food lover, we’d recommend the excellent Walnut Tree for their incredible Sunday roasts and The King’s Head in nearby Little Marlow. The Bounty is another local favourite. Sitting on the Thames and only accessible by foot or a short boat crossing, it feels like a hidden gem and is our favourite pub to visit on a warm day.

Coffee aficionados will be more than happy with Bourne End’s offerings. Lee’s Bakery is a firm local favourite for their great coffee and treats, with Moreganic also offering fantastic customer service and great-tasting food.

If shopping is more your thing, Bourne End has many independent shops, such as The Lemon Tree, Flowerland and The Fruit Market, as well as the essential convenience stores and everyday services. For boutique shopping, stylish homeware and more restaurants, Marlow is less than a ten-minute drive away. Beaconsfield is another excellent option, especially if you’re looking for premium food shops, cafés and independent retailers.

Family Friendly

With plenty of green spaces, quiet residential roads and plenty of riverside paths for the little ones to burn off steam, it’s no wonder that Bourne End is popular for families. When you fancy venturing further, there are some brilliant family attractions close by. Odds Farm Park is around fifteen minutes away and remains one of Buckinghamshire’s most popular family days out. Bekonscot Model Village, Cliveden and LEGOLAND Windsor are all within easy reach too, giving you plenty of entertainment options throughout the year.

Schools

Bourne End is in the catchment for several great schools, so no matter what age your little ones are, they’ll get a good education. The village is served by Claytons Primary School, with some parents also choosing the great primaries in Cookham.

For older kids, Bourne End Academy is a great option for secondary education within the village itself. You also have access to four outstanding grammar schools:  Beaconsfield High (girls), Wycombe High (girls), Sir William Borlase’s (Marlow co-ed), and John Hampden (boys).

Bourne End is also in an ideal location for some of the area’s most respected independent schools. For younger children, Davenies in Beaconsfield, The Beacon in Amersham, Caldicott near Farnham Royal and Godstowe in High Wycombe (girls) are great options. For secondary education, nearby choices include Wycombe Abbey, Claires Court in Maidenhead and St George’s School in Ascot, with several offering school transport from the wider area.

Commuting To London

Bourne End Train Station

Despite being surrounded by countryside, Bourne End is surprisingly well connected. The village has its own railway station on the Marlow Branch Line, with regular services to Maidenhead (every 30 minutes on peak and every hour off-peak). From there, Great Western Railway and the Elizabeth line provide fast connections into London Paddington, meaning you can get into the city in less than 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can drive to High Wycombe (to London Marylebone), Taplow (Elizabeth line) or Amersham (for Met line services) for a more direct journey.

For drivers, both the M40 and M4 are easily accessible, making journeys across the South East and even into London really simple. Bourne End is also only half an hour’s drive from Heathrow Airport, making it really easy to jet off.

Health & Wellness

The Thames Path Sign

Bourne End makes it easy to stay active, whatever your routine looks like. The Thames Path is perfect for a morning walk, run or cycle, while the surrounding countryside offers plenty of scenic routes for longer weekend adventures. If you prefer exercising indoors, The Gym Joint provides a well-equipped 24-hour gym in the village, with even more fitness studios and leisure facilities available in nearby Marlow and Beaconsfield. Just over the bridge in Cookham, The Odney Club offers tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool and beautifully maintained grounds that stretch down to the River Thames.

If relaxation is just as important as exercise, you’ll find a number of excellent spas within a short drive, including those at Danesfield House and Cliveden. Both of these spas have been included in our Best Spas in Bucks guide, which is well worth a read if you like to relax as much as we do!

Bourne End Fun Night

The monthly Bourne End Community Market brings together local producers, independent makers and food stalls. Bourne End Fun Night has become one of the area’s biggest annual events, with festive stalls, fairground rides, live entertainment, a Christmas lights switch-on and Santa’s grotto. Seasonal events at the Community Centre, charity fundraisers and summer community days help bring residents together throughout the year.

Insider Tip

Bourne end footpath

If you’re visiting for the first time, we’d recommend coming for a riverside walk and stopping off at The Bounty for lunch. Because you can’t drive directly to the pub, it feels wonderfully peaceful even during the summer months, with a lovely breeze from the river on warmer days. Make sure to arrive before midday on sunny weekends if you want to guarantee a table overlooking the river.

Our Opinion

We think Bourne End is one of Buckinghamshire’s most underrated places to live. It doesn’t have quite the same profile as Marlow, which is exactly what so many people love about it. The atmosphere feels calmer, the community is welcoming, and the riverside setting gives the village some real character.

What really stands out is how easy it is to enjoy a high quality of life here. You can walk beside the Thames before breakfast, commute into London with relative ease and spend weekends exploring some of Buckinghamshire’s best countryside. For anyone looking for a village that offers both convenience and charm, Bourne End deserves a place on the shortlist.
