Bourne End, nestled on the banks of the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, is one of those charming villages that often gets overlooked. As The Bucks Guide, we’ve spent countless weekends exploring the area, and we’re excited to share some of our favourite activities and hidden gems.
Explore the Riverside
The Thames Path is an absolute delight. We love starting our morning with a leisurely stroll along the river, watching boats glide past and spotting local wildlife. It’s the perfect place to unwind, and there are plenty of benches to sit and soak in the tranquillity. We often bring a flask of tea and simply watch the world go by.
For something a bit more energetic, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard. Personally, I find paddling along the calm stretches of the Thames incredibly refreshing, and it’s a fun way to see the village from a different perspective. Families especially enjoy the gentle waters here.
Visit Little Marlow
Just a short distance from Bourne End is the picturesque village of Little Marlow. We’re always charmed by the quaint streets lined with historic cottages and the welcoming local pubs. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon stroll or a leisurely lunch.
The village is also home to some lovely nature walks. We particularly enjoy the route around Little Marlow Lakes. It’s peaceful and great for spotting birds and other wildlife. In our opinion, it’s one of the best spots to reconnect with nature without venturing far.
Discover Local History
Bourne End might be small, but it has a rich history. The old railway station and the remnants of historic buildings tell stories of the village’s past. We enjoy taking a slow wander through the streets, imagining what life was like decades ago.
Take Part in Community Events
One of the best things about Bourne End is the community spirit. We’ve attended local fairs and festivals, and it’s always a warm, welcoming atmosphere. From craft markets to music events, there’s always something happening that makes you feel part of the village.
We particularly love the annual summer fete. There’s a real sense of nostalgia, and it’s a great way to meet locals and enjoy traditional games and treats. It’s events like these that make us appreciate Bourne End even more.
