Things To Do In Buckingham

Buckingham may be a small market town, but it’s full of charm, history and hidden gems that make it well worth a visit. From its bustling high street and historic landmarks to its tranquil green spaces and grand estates, the town offers something for everyone. Having spent time exploring Buckingham myself, I’ve come to appreciate not only the attractions but also the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes each experience feel personal and memorable.
Explore the Historic Town Centre
One of my favourite ways to begin a day in Buckingham is to wander through the historic town centre. The high street is lined with charming independent shops, cosy cafés and traditional pubs that make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. On market days, the square is full of energy, with local traders selling fresh produce, baked goods and handmade crafts. There’s something especially inviting about the slower pace compared to larger towns, and I always find myself lingering longer than planned.
Visit Buckingham Old Gaol Museum
Buckingham Old Gaol Museum is a must-see, especially if you’re interested in history. The building itself is an imposing stone structure in the middle of the town that looks like it has countless stories to tell. Inside, the exhibits bring Buckingham’s past to life, from tales of infamous prisoners to displays of Victorian life and local artefacts. It’s both educational and atmospheric, and I found myself spending more time there than I initially planned.
What made my visit special was how the museum blends history with storytelling. Reading about the prisoners who were once held there gave me a real appreciation for how different life was only a few generations ago. Standing in the cold, echoing cells, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection to the past. It’s the sort of experience that stays with you long after you’ve left, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone visiting Buckingham.
Enjoy the Green Spaces
Another highlight for me was taking advantage of Buckingham’s lovely green spaces. The Chandos Park is perfect for a relaxed stroll, a picnic or even just a bit of people-watching. I particularly enjoyed walking by the River Great Ouse that winds its way through the park; the sound of the water and the sight of swans gliding along is incredibly calming. It’s a wonderful escape from the busier parts of town and makes you appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds Buckingham.
On one occasion, I brought a book and spent a sunny afternoon on the grass, with the river nearby providing the perfect backdrop. Families were playing, couples were walking hand-in-hand and children were cycling about with carefree energy. It made me feel grateful for the simple joy of slowing down and being present in such a serene environment. These green spaces are not just for recreation but also places where you can recharge.
Discover Stowe House and Gardens
Just outside Buckingham lies Stowe House and its magnificent gardens, which I’d argue are one of the most spectacular attractions in the area. The gardens are vast and full of beautifully designed landscapes, classical temples and sweeping views. When I first walked through, I was struck by the sheer scale of the grounds, and it felt like every turn revealed a new, postcard-perfect scene. The architecture of Stowe House itself is equally stunning and worth the visit alone.
I visited in early spring, and the gardens were coming alive with fresh colours and blooming flowers. The crisp air combined with the grandeur of the surroundings created an unforgettable experience. At one point, I stopped at a small temple overlooking a lake and simply stood in awe. It’s the kind of place that makes you appreciate history, art and nature all at once. Without a doubt, Stowe is somewhere I plan to return to again and again.
