About
Old Amersham Memorial Gardens are a beautifully maintained green space in the heart of Old Town, combining historical significance with ecological and community value. Opened in 1949 to honour those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, the gardens feature a WWI war memorial and a WWII commemorative plaque, the former originally located in St. Mary’s churchyard.
Over the years, the gardens have been enhanced with features such as The Peace Garden, a sensory garden, WWI replica models including two SE5a bi-planes and HMS Dreadnought, a lone soldier statue, and the Queen’s 90th birthday rose garden. The pond fountain was updated in 2022, further enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.
The gardens also serve as a hub for community activity. They host free, well-attended summer band concerts and provide an area of ecological interest, recognised with multiple GOLD Awards from Thames and Chilterns in Bloom and several national RHS Britain in Bloom certificates of distinction. In season, the gardens are full of colour and life, attracting both visitors and local wildlife.
Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll, take in the historical monuments, and join in community events. A full programme of the Town Council’s summer band concerts is available on the official website here .
