About

The Metropolitan No.1 Train is a half-scale replica of the original E-class steam locomotive, celebrating Amersham’s railway heritage and the development of Metroland. The original Metropolitan Railway, opened in 1863 as the world’s first underground railway, extended to Amersham in 1892, with the first official train departing Baker Street at 10.47am on 1 September and arriving in Amersham less than an hour later.

The original Metropolitan No.1 locomotive, built in 1898 at Neasden works and designed by Chief Mechanical Engineer T. F. Clark, served the railway for twenty years. Initially numbered 79, it replaced the original A-class No.1 and became a central part of services to Aylesbury. The engines’ distinctive colours evolved from olive green to deep red, remaining a signature until the railway was absorbed into London Transport in 1933.

This half-scale model, complete with Jubilee carriages, was created by the 1st Chesham Bois Scout Group in collaboration with Amersham Town Council as part of Amersham in Bloom. It honours the railway’s role in shaping Amersham-on-the-Hill and the wider Metroland area.

The display is located at Oakfield Corner, near Hill Avenue, just a short walk from Amersham railway station, making it an easy and fascinating stop for visitors interested in local history and railway heritage.
